A picturesque village of Roussillon will be a highlight on the way to any traveler in the south of France. It is located in the heart of the Luberon Valley and is known for its red rocks, which from a distance resemble an alien landscape. These mighty cliffs left over from the largest quarries in Europe, where over time was mined ocher. Today this place is a protected ocher zone.
A distinctive feature of the village of Roussillon is its terracotta houses, built of local materials, and painted in 17 shades of ocher - from sandy yellow to red. They look great on a background of evergreen pine forests that surround Roussillon. The village is located in 40 minutes from the most quarries. Today, villagers are offered the excellent pottery souvenirs, made in the workshops of folk crafts of Roussillon and painted in natural colors.
Be sure to visit this area at sunrise: on the east side of the village you will find a viewing platform, which offers stunning views of the Pink City!
