Avignon - the administrative center of the department of Vaucluse in southern France - is the city, interesting for its location, amazing nature, stunning architecture and extremely rich in events and prominent figures in history.

The city lies on the banks of the River Rhône. All sides of Avignon are surrounded by fortifications and ramparts, one of the most well-preserved examples of the Middle Ages fortifications in the world. Today, the city is home for nearly 90 thousand people.

The French Middle Ages writer François Rabelais once called Avignon «a ringing city». Such an association was inspired by the ringing of bells from many churches as well as more than three dozen monasteries, located at that time in the city.
