Map - Department Bouches-du-Rhône

The department, which stretches along the Mediterranean coast up to the very bottom of the Alps, borders on the departments of Vaucluse and Maritime Alpes, and strikes the travellers by various interesting landscapes and picturesque views. This is the full-flowing river Rhone which, having started in the Swiss Alpes, flows into the Mediterranean not far from Marseille. These are extremely high rocks close to the town of Les Baux. This is the azure mirror of the sea in small coves all along the coast and a violet lake near the town of Aigues-Mortes. This is also Camargue valley with a beautiful biosphere nature reserve, and the wealth of flora and fauna. These are vineyards and olive groves, lavender and sun-flower fields, green fertile valleys and meadows. These are slender cypresses and mighty cedars, age-old sycamores and broad-crowned pines, which bend down over the sea as if admiring themselves. This is the air, full of the fragrances of the mountains, sea, boundless fields. And also – the scalding sun and the wayward wind Mistral.

In cities and wonderful small towns of the department various epochs and civilizations interlaced, their original age-long spirit remained. At the same time they wonderfully fit in modern life and found their new contemporary images, having combined in harmony the conveniences and possibilities of the present day with the wisdom and singularity of the past. All this makes Buch-du-Rhone interesting and attractive for the travellers. It is, certainly, the place one must visit, at least once in his lifetime.
