Mount Boron Park is a great vacation place in the resort of Nice (it is rightly called the «green lungs» of the city).

Mount Boron Park, NiceLocals and tourists go up to the park located on the Mount Boron at the height of over 190 meters for a walk, a picnic and to enjoy the magnificent views from the mountain.

Mont Boron Park occupies 57 hectares – the mountain where it is located is in the eastern part of Nice (between the port and the bay of Villefranche).

The location of the Mont Boron Park is also interesting by the fact that many thousands of years ago the early humans were already living there, their camp was found by archaeologists in the Cave of Le Lazaret. According to archaeologists, a winter stay of pre-Neandertal hunters was in the cave. (This cave, known since 1821, is on the west side of the mountain Boron nearest to the sea).

In the Cave of Le Lazaret the scientists have found stone tools made by primitive hunters, the remains of humans and animals (as well as long-extinct woolly rhinoceros).

During the Middle Ages in the place of location of the park the battles often occurred. Among the locals there is a legend about the Moors that once captured the Mount and the brave monk Bobon who could expel the invaders. Allegedly, then the mountain was named after the monk. After that, the city residents decided to cut down the forest on the mountain for strategic reasons – for the construction of a fortresses.

Later (in the XVI century), on the north side of the Mount Boron the Fort du Mont Alban was built. «In addition» to it to protect the city from the south side the Mont Boron Fortress was erected at the end of the XIX century. (Basically, the territory of modern park is located between the two forts).

And when the need to protect and defend the Nice against possible invasions «disappeared» the citizens thought about the restoration of the cut forests. And in 1862 the order was given to Prosper Demonze (forestry engineer)to solve this problem.

Four years later in the place of meadows where cattle grazed earlier a beautiful forest park appeared. You will not see the flowerbeds and fountains here, but there is a huge variety of wild flowers, shrubs and trees of different breeds (pistachios, juniper, eucalyptus trees, stone oaks and olives, cedars, cypresses, and so on).

The paths are laid among the trees and fragrant shrubs (their total length is 11 kilometres). After walkin, you can go up to the «picnic area» – a few dozen of simple wooden tables and benches which are often used by locals and visitors Nice are placed there.

After the «snack» in the fresh air you can visit the viewing platforms near the Fort du Mont Alban and the Mont Boron Fortress. (However, no one is let inside). Many visitors are walk here with pleasure inspecting the walls of castles and admiring the spectacular views from the mountain. This walk around the fort takes about forty minutes, the benches for rest are placed around. From the Fort Mont Boron one can see the whole of Nice and the Bay of Angels.

Sitting here you can endlessly look at the blue sea to the horizon, the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer and Cap Ferrat cape at the other shore. (A popular resort of aristocrats and millionaires, one of the «pearls» of the Riviera, the village of Saint-Jacques-Cap-Ferrat is located on the cap).
