Cimetiere du Chateau NiceThe architectural aspect of the cemetery immediately impresses those who come here. Graceful tombs with exquisite carvings and gravestones in the neoclassical style, imitating the Roman sarcophagi, making the Cimetière du Château in Nice one of the most beautiful in Europe.

The graveyard at Cimetière du Château has 2,800 graves, which are placed in this «city of the dead» on a high hill. After the Nice Opera fire of 1881, making two hundred victims, a pyramid-shaped monument honoring them was erected at the cemetery entrance. There is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity (Chapelle de la Sainte-Trinité) (built in 1935 by the plans by architect François Aragon) next to the cemetery entrance, where people can light a candle and pray for the souls, resting here.

The ruins of the ancient citadel make a beautiful shadowing of the Cimetière du Château in Nice – the silence and the blue sky all around. A breathtaking view opens from here to Nice, the mountains and the sea. From the Castle Hill (Colline du Château), people see the city with its animation somewhere far below, and here one can think of the eternal...

The ancient citadel of the city, whose ruins can be found on the hill, was one of the most powerful of the Mediterranean at the time. (It even withstood the siege of the Allied forces - of the French King Francois I (Roi français François Ier) and the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent). It was the Sun King (le Roi-Soleil) Louis XIV, who transformed the citadel in ruins, besieging the fortress in 1706.

The Cimetière du Château in Nice with the ruins of the ancient citadel of the city was created in 1783, its development was required by the prohibition of the King of Sardinia Victor Amadeus III (roi de Sardaigne Victor-Amédée III) burying the dead in the churches of the kingdom. (As it was formerly the custom in Sardinia, before the late eighteenth century).

The cemetery was built on the spot where it had previously been a part of the fortress, which was rebuilt in the sixteenth century. The preserved remains of the citadel walls became «support structures» of the terraces, on which the cemetery is located.

People belonging to different confessions: Protestants, Orthodox, Catholics and Jews (there is a cenotaph in honor of the Holocaust victims of Nice in the south, Jewish cemetery) found their «final resting place» on this hill.
