One of the most famous and spectacular attractions of Nice is the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice (French: Basilique Notre-Dame de Nice). (Also, this is the largest Catholic church in the city, built in the period between 1864 and 1868). For the construction of the Church of Notre-Dame de Nice, the architect Charles Lenormand chose the neo-Gothic style, and this choice was not accidental. (After the annexation of the County of Nice to France in 1860, a new church was intended to emphasize, that it was then the French city, and the Gothic was suitable for that as well as possible).

basilique Notre Dame de NiceThe Basilica, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, makes a lasting impression - a huge window- «rose», arches and two square towers of 65 meters.
Previously, the Gothic Basilica has been emphasized by its gray walls, but now it seems more festive and «more colorful». After the recent restoration, the church appeared in white «dress» with a gold plated trim.

The construction history of the basilica has kept the name of the Bishop Jean-Pierre Sola. Seeing that in a marginal area of Nice (which has become the center now), there were few temples, he addressed to the office of mayor of the city with a request to finance the construction of the new church. Unfortunately, the Bishop’s request was refused because the money was already allocated for the construction of the station.

After being refused, Bishop Jean-Pierre Sola engaged in collecting funds for the church construction, in collaboration with Father Alexander Lavigne, the famous priest in Paris.

The donations were received from ordinary French people, as well as from representatives of the foreign colony in nice, the funds were raised at the charity auction.

The architect Charles Lenormand, engaged to work on the project of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice, coped with the task perfectly. The Church reminds people of Our Lady of Paris together with the Cathedral of St. Maurice d'Angers. Only the facade of the Basilica of Nice, unlike other cathedrals, is decorated with two statues (representing the Virgin Mary) - the money collected was sufficient for such a number of decorations for the facade.

Moreover, the interior of the basilica attracts attention by beautiful stained glass windows, made by the best French masters of the 19th century, a copy of the painting «Holy Family» by Bartolomé Murillo and a statue of the Virgin Mary, located in a small chapel.

In our time, in addition to services, musical concerts are often organized in this temple, characterized by excellent acoustics.
