There are lots of museums in Nice, and one of the most unusual is Anatole Jakovsky International Museum of Naive Art. It is unlikely that it can boast the same popularity among tourists as a Museum Matisse or Chagall. But the works of naive art characterized by childlike simplicity of expression attract many who remain a child at heart...

Musee international dart naIf Anatole JakovskyThe visitors can see here the paintings with simple lines and pure colours. On the canvas of Emile Crociani named «Day and night in Nice» the city looks incredibly beautiful. On the Henri Rousseau’s painting «Portrait of Frumence Biche in Civil Clothes» depicts a contented with life French-barbel, and the spectators take joy with him... There is also a portrait of Gertrude O'Brady painted by Jakovsky himself. We see a cute smiling man in a sweater with a funny fluffy cat in one hand and a pipe in the other.

At first glance, the paintings of self-taught artists, so like children's drawings may even seem primitive (for which they have been repeatedly attacked by the critics). However, the naive art has found its admirers and now it is recognized and presented in museums around the world. (Moreover, it is even taught now).

The creator of the Museum of Naive Art in Nice, Anatole Jakovsky, was a native of Chisinau. He came to the French capital in 1932 with the aim to study and become an architect. But here, in the Montparnasse company of abstract artists Braque, Zadkine, Picasso (who soon became the Anatole’s friends) his creative nature manifested – Jakovsky decides to become an art historian.

Talented young man rather quickly was able to improve his French and a year later he published his first art history monograph devoted to abstract art and even a year later (in 1934) – the book. But abstraction has not become an «eternal theme» for Jakovsky. Having lost the thrill of it in forties Anatole «switched» to the naive art.

Jakovsky’s casual acquaintance in Paris on the eve of the war with the American Gertrude MacBrady became fatal for the woman. It was him who advised Gertrude to begin painting (to distract from the sad thoughts pursuing her after the divorce). As a result, she became a well-known naive painter (who worked under the pseudonym of Gertrud O'Brady). And during the World War II Anatole Jakovsky got acquainted with the works of Henri Rousseau and Jean Fous and their paintings finally determined the fate of the art historian.

Anatole  engaged in collecting naive painting and its promotion, began to organize international exhibitions dedicated to the «naive art». All collected paintings Jakovsky bequeathed to the city.

Museum of Naive Art was opened in 1982 in a pink the Château Saint Hélène (which was the former residence of perfumer François Coty). Now you can see here over 600 drawings, paintings and sculptures of «naive» artists from 27 countries. (Louis Vivin, Henri Rousseau, Ivan Generalić, Séraphine Louis, Grandma Moses et al.). By these works one can trace the history of naïve art from the XVIII century to the present.

At the entrance to the museum, in a large park with rare species of plants, the visitors are «met» by the bright huge sculptures of Frédéric Lanovsky. They seemed to prepare us for the perception of a childishly joyful and light world which opens to all in this museum.
