Address - 24, Rue Saint-Michel, 06500
Type - Architecture, Monuments, The Basilica
The largest building in the Baroque style on the French Riviera is the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange in Menton. The temple was built on the place where previously there were two religious buildings, and in the 18th century a bell tower was added nearby. (The Church of Saint-Michel-Archange obtained the status of the Basilica at the end of the last century from Pope John Paul II).

Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange, MentonIt is known that in 1757 the wedding of Honore III, Prince of Monaco took place there. (The erection of the temple structure dates back to the 1st half of the XVII century during the reign of his predecessor, Prince Honore II).

It is interesting that the construction of the temple (started in 1640) continued for several centuries! The first architect was the native of Genoa, Lorenzo Lavagna. In the XIX century the restoration of the Basilica facade was conducted – the columns of the Corinthian and Ionic Orders were added.

The facade of the temple is divided into 2 levels decorated with reliefs and columns. Statues of Saints Michel, Mauritius and Roch stand in separate ambries.

The interior of the Basilica can be characterized by special splendour (only for the decoration of the altar 17 types of marble of various colours were used). On chancel painting by Andre Manchello the Archangel Michel striking the snake is depicted. (Also there is a statue of this Saint carved from wood and painted in the XVIII century in the temple). In a side chapel there is a beautiful image of Holy Mother with the Christ child.

The porch in front of the temple is paved with stones of black and white colours (besides they are laid in the form of a mosaic repeating the Grimaldi coat of arms).

Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange is located on the eponymous square (where by tradition established in the middle of the last century the festival of classical music is held every year).

It is worth adding that in Menton you can admire the chapels of two Brotherhoods of Penitents (Black and White) built back in the late XVII century in Baroque style.
