Palais du Pharo located in the western part of Marseille (near the Old Port) has an interesting history. The building of the palace was built on the order of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. The idea to build a palace by the sea «visited» the emperor during his trip to the city in 1852.

Palais du PharoAnd 3 years later having received as a gift a piece of land in Marseille Napoleon III entrusted the construction of the Palais du Pharo to the courtiers the architect Hector-Martin Lefuel and the architect Jean-Marc Vaucher. (On August 15, 1858, on the day of the emperor's birthday the first stone in the foundation of the structure was laid).

It is worth noting that the builders had not an easy task, because it was possible to get to the site only by sea and the soil on a steep plateau was quite solid.

Initially the Emperor planned to make a palace - «copy» of the one located in Biarritz and belonged to the Empress Eugenie. But in reality, for the construction of the building the local stone (instead of bricks) was used and the palace in Marseille in the end turned out to be larger and more colourful.

The construction was completed in 1870, only the furnishing of the Palace was needed. But Bonaparte was not destined to live in this luxurious imperial residence. He lost the crown after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. The revolutionary unrest began, the Third Republic was established in France. Two years after these events, Napoleon III left this world, and the people removed the Emperor’s emblems from the facade and lattices of the Palais du Pharo...

After the revolutionary events the city authorities tried to adjudge the Palais du Pharo from the Empress Eugenie who finally having received this building into ownership decided to donate it to Marseille. Some time after 1904 the Medical Institute was located in the Palais du Pharo.

Surviving until today the palace is now the place for the various city services and the exhibition centre.
