Speaking about the sights of Marseille it would be a great omission not to mention the Musée Cantini (Cantini Museum). (Where the one of the largest public collections of French modern art which mainly reflects the period from 1900 to 1960 is kept).

Musée Cantini is located in the centre of Marseille, near the Old Port.

Musee Cantini ProvenceIt is known about Museum creator, Jules Cantini, that he was known in Marseille as a sculptor, a carver of marble and a philanthropist.

The building which now houses the Museum was built in 1694. Initially in the mansion Cap Nègre Company was located (engaged in trade of wool and leather, as well as coral mining). Then the building was bought by the Montgrand family that kept a small hotel there. And in 1936, the mansion was purchased and converted into a museum by Jules Cantini.

The visitors of the museum are offered an exclusively interesting permanent exhibition of works by famous artists (Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, Miró, Jean Dubuffet and others.). If we talk about the representatives of different artistic styles, the Fauvism is represented in the museum by the works of Charles Camoin, early Cubism – by the works of Henri Laurent, Albert Gleizes, Raoul Dufy. Geometric abstraction is reflected in the paintings of Jean Hélion, Vasiliy Kandinskiy, Alberto Magnelli, František Kupka, Surrealism is represented by works of Joan Miró, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Victor Brauner.

Now the Musée Cantini is the main «pillar» of cultural structure of Marseilles, introducing, in addition to its permanent collection, a variety of temporary exhibitions.

The name of Jules Cantini is remembered in France not only due to the museum created by him. This patron of the arts «presented» Marcel the magnificent works made with his own hands: in 1911 – the fountain on the Place Castellane and a copy of the famous statue of David by Michelangelo (created in 1903 it now stands at the crossroads of the Pompidou waterfront an Prado Avenue). Earlier, in 1886, Cantini made the marble main altar of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Guard and the altars for the six chapels of the temple.
