In the small town of Grasse, which can rightly be called the «cradle» of the art of perfumery and a «showcase» of the French perfume industry, there are two Museums of Perfumery. (However, one of them, located in a former perfume factory, belongs to a single famous brand of perfume - Fragonard).

Musee International de la ParfumerieThe second Museum of Perfumery in Grasse, which we’ll talk about, has an international status. Here you can see how the culture of perfumery consumption has changed over several centuries.

The inauguration of the museum took place in 1989 in a historic building of the eighteenth century (for which the restoration works were soon needed). Therefore, at the beginning of the XXI century, the museum was closed for restoration, which lasted about 4 years. The project was implemented by a team, led by the architect Frederik Jung. (About 11 million euros were required to perform all the necessary works). The renovated Museum of Perfumery was already open to the public in 2008.

Now here, on the surface of 3500 square meters, one can see (and smell) a multiplicity of product samples of master perfumers. The museum collection has over 50,000 specimens, collected by the enthusiasts perfumers in the world. The visitors have an opportunity to see the perfumes of the crowned residents of Versailles and the Louvre. Moreover, nearby, there are fragrances, which are currently used by the inhabitants of South America, Africa and the Orient.

And for the oldest (and therefore the most valuable) aromatic «exhibitions», special conditions have been created in the museum – it relates to lighting and temperature control.

In this museum, the visitors will be surprised to learn that the first perfumers were tannery craftsmen of Grasse – as the first fragrance created were designed specifically for the animals leather scented tanning.

The collection of the Grasse museum was replenished also due to other museums in France. Some of the pieces were provided by the National Museum of Asian Arts Guimet in Paris, the Louvre and Versailles. (Some exhibitions are dated mainly eighteenth-twentieth centuries) Among them, there are extremely rare specimens, such as the travel kit, once belonged to the Queen Marie Antoinette. The weight of this travel kit with all its contents was over 80kg!
