Despite the fact that in Provence the French language is approved by the law as an official one the locals speak very special Provencal language (also called Occitan language). The Provencals have an accent unusual for the residents of other regions of France (they pronounce many word endings «softer»). But the vowels are pronounced in Provence closer to the English pronunciation. Despite of these phonetic differences the French newcomer from other regions will always be understood by the Provencal, but it will also be immediately clear for him that he is talking with a «stranger», not a local ...

Such «language differences» can be explained historically. This is because not so long ago (only few generations have changed ever since) the Provencal language differed even more – it was a so-called «Langue d’Oc» dialect. The Provence inhabitants started to be taught the «common» French in schools relatively not long time ago, and it resulted in that the Langue d'Oc became almost out of use.

In the early 1900’s, several enthusiasts in France wishing to preserve this language nevertheless tried to do so that it did not finally fall into oblivion. The courses that teach everyone who wants to the Langue d'Oc were created by their forces. Also, it is learned in some regional universities.

ut Langue d’Oc has gone forever from the daily use of the Provencals having left the peculiarity of phonetics and pronunciation «as a souvenir».
