Today it is the largest industrial centre, as well as the largest port in France. (This one of the oldest cities in Europe was found in 600 BC by the ancient Greeks).
Modern Marseille is a very «southern» port city: bright and noisy, fragrant and romantic... there is everything except boredom. There is a real mixture of different races, dialects, cultures - you will be amazed by the abundance of immigrants in Marseilles.
A fresh wind of wanderings and adventures «wanders» through its streets - it offers an unforgettable walk for us also!
Let's visit and a rich ancient architecture centre, and colourful markets, where we can see how the recently procured seafood is dried in the sun. In the centre (near the church of Saint-Vincennes-de-Paul) is the famous Fair of beautiful statuettes.
Be sure to go on the embankment to admire the yachts wallowing here.
If you do not mind a sea voyage (from this embankment the pleasure boats set sail) you can get into a mysterious Chateau d'If to see how the famous prisoner, «Man in the Iron Mask» lived here.

Then, having tasted the fish and seafood in one of the restaurants of the Old Port visit the Arabic quarter and visit the «Shining City» by Le Corbusier, get accustomed to life «in utopia».
But in general the lift of the real modern Marseillais is far from utopian, and if you are interested in the real life, you will love Marcel!
You will appreciate this city also for the abundance of a variety of museums and exhibitions. (For example, Palais Longchamp where the Museum of Fine Arts is located).
The volunteers can relax on the beaches of Marseilles - the Prado or Des Catalans.
Also you will be offered a lot of entertainments and excursions, for example, viewing the symbol of Marseilles, the Cathedral Notre-Dame de la Garde. If you go up on its roof, an amazing view of Marseille will open to our eyes!
Being there is worth to visit and the near the catacombs of the Abbey of Saint-Victor, and feel like a real «sea wolf» by visiting the Le Panier – old Corsican quarter of Marseille.
If you are interested in clubs and cafes, trendy informal shops (and also – the bookshops and second-hand bookshops), the flea markets, you are awaited by the youth cultural centers of Marseille: Jean Jaures Square and Cours Julien.
