French Côte d’Azur can without exaggeration be called a «paradise» for directors and writers, in fact, here you can easily make a film shooting on any topic. For the «filmmakers» the entire coast has become very convenient «film set» which requires a minimum of scenery!

There are beautiful views and landscapes, wonderful nature, sunny weather with no wind around – perfect conditions.

Therefore, no one was surprised by the fact that it is here since the advent of cinema the shooting of the first films started.

So, the Lumière brothers made their first cinema masterpiece on the Côte d'Azur of France (this film is known as the «Train Pulling into a Station»).

Let us remember the date – 1896!

Since that time the coast became the place of quite active shootings, gained a fame among the film directors, and, of course, among the French and foreign tourists. They strived by all means to visit the places where the popular films that became cult were shot. And after the Cannes Film Festival was established the Côte d'Azur has also become a place of «pilgrimage» of celebrities from around the world.

Perhaps, there is not a single corner which still would not have been imprinted in this or that film. The most famous directors filmed comedies, thrillers and action films, melodramas and detectives in those places (suffice it to mention such films as «The Girl from Monaco», «Bimboland», «Monte Carlo», «Killers» and «Iron Man 2»).

In the early twentieth century, the Côte d'Azur became a place of «localization» of the film studios the «products» of which have transformed the coast in one of the most famous places in the world (many local resorts owe their discovery and popularity to the cinema).

So, Saint-Tropez is remembered by many because of the film «The Troops of St. Tropez» sensational at that time by the film director Jean Girault (where the remarkable talent of the actor Louis de Funes who played a major role of charismatic gendarme Cruchot was so clearly manifested).

By the films shot on the coast we are now able to «monitor» the changes that have taken place on the French Riviera.

That same Saint-Tropez has become a favourite and the most prestigious holiday destination for the respectable wealthy tourists and celebrities after the release of film «And God Created Woman» with Brigitte Bardot in the leading role.

And if today we find ourselves in that places where they filmed the nature for that film it may be noted that there is almost nothing has changed! A wonderful sandy beach not far from the town of Pampelonne, the rocks, the sea and the lighthouse at Cape Camarat still can «recreate the frames» from the famous film.

To see the lighthouse and the beaches of Pampelonne memorable to so many «the fans» can watching the film «La Piscine» («The Swimming Pool») shot at the end of the 60s in the town of Ramatuelle (where Romy Schneideret and Alain Delon were starring).

Watching the «old» films it is easy to notice the changes in the «imaghe» of the different cities along the coast.

After watching the film by Henry King «Tender Is the Night» shot in 1961 we shall see that the coastline of the Principality of Monaco has undergone the greatest and most noticeable changes. (The film shows a panorama of the Principality from the beach to the Rock of Monaco-Ville, and the villa located nearby). Now this area has changed completely; there is a famous Jimmy'z disco, a modern luxury hotel Monte-Carlo Bay and Sporting Monte-Carlo.

In Nice, in 1955, Alfred Hitchcock made a film «To Catch a Thief», and then Fontvieille ward known today was absent in the town (it was built in the 1970s.)

In another popular film, «Ronin», with Robert De Niro in the leading role, imprinted the image of the city of 90s. The streets of Nice then become the place of filming the chase scenes (that followed after the firefight in La Turbie).

A shot from the film by Georges Lautner «Cop or Hood» with the participation of the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo became historic. The matter is that in 1979 when the film was shot on the site of the fountain at Massena Square in Nice the seven-meter statue of Apollo was removed. It was returned on its original place only in 2011.
